Wife of the Kebbi State Governor and CEO Medicaid Radio-diagnostics, Dr Zainab Bagudu, yesterday joined advocates and partners at the residence of the Deputy High Commisioner of the United Kingdom in Nigeria Ms Harriet Thomson in conversation about the world’s exploding population. Also present were stakeholders across traditional, medical and financial institutions.
The meeting was ahead of today the 11th of July which is World Population Day, a day to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues. This year’s theme is “Family Planning: Empowering People, Developing Nations.” Access to safe, voluntary family planning is a human right. It is also central to gender equality and women’s empowerment, and is a key factor in reducing poverty.
There are 7.5 billion people on Earth, and that number grows by 150 people every minute. By 2030, it is estimated that there will be 115 million Nigerians under the age of 15, which presents opportunities as well as challenges. The health, economic and psychosocial implications of such growth is worrisome.
